She strongly opposed discrimination and worked to create a more inclusive society. Her legal acumen and dedication were instrumental in shaping policies that ensured greater rights for women and children. She actively engaged with schools and colleges, inspiring young minds to understand and respect constitutional values.

Introducing India’s Constitution to Young Minds

Leila Seth’s only book for children, We, the Children of India: The Preamble to Our Constitution, is a significant contribution to civic education. Recognizing the need for young readers to understand the foundation of their country’s governance, she wrote this book in a simple, engaging style that made complex constitutional concepts accessible to children.

The book carefully explains the Preamble of the Indian Constitution, breaking it down into easily understandable terms. It highlights core values such as:

  • Justice – Ensuring fairness in all aspects of life.
  • Liberty – Guaranteeing freedom of thought, expression, and belief.
  • Equality – Treating everyone with dignity and fairness, regardless of differences.
  • Fraternity – Fostering a sense of unity and brotherhood among all Indians.

With a foreword by former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, the book also introduces children to the history of India’s independence, the making of the Constitution, and the vision of its architects, including Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. It provides insights into how and why the Constitution was created, ensuring that young readers appreciate its relevance in everyday life.

A Lasting Legacy

Leila Seth’s impact extends far beyond her time on the bench. Her work in legal reform, education, and social justice continues to inspire generations. Through her writings, activism, and judicial contributions, she left behind a legacy of justice, equality, and empowerment, ensuring that the ideals of the Indian Constitution are upheld and understood by all.
